Eric Smart - Spiritual Sunday
I joined HRC in January 2012. It all looked rather daunting – all these lights, switches, levers, screens and microphones. But with good tuition from colleagues, it was only three months before I was able to take control of my own show – Magical Musicals. I like to think I might be a poor man’s Elaine Paige who broadcasts a wonderful programme on Radio 2 on Sunday afternoons which is also all about songs from the shows. I recently celebrated my 700th edition and look forward to the next 700! Some four years on from doing my Musicals show, I was also asked to prepare the Spiritual Sunday programme, which is designed to be a compensation for anyone not being able to get to church on a Sunday morning. We have a couple of hymns, a couple of bible readings, a thought for the day and a prayer for the day as well as looking at the life of someone who has recently passed away and someone who is celebrating a birthday. All of that is sprinkled with some wonderful music, both traditional and pop. I get a great deal of joy from both of these shows and my hope is that patients and other listeners will get the same.
Dave Hurrell - Every Song A Memory
I was and still am one of the baby boomers and to that end I play records that reflect that wonderful age (from the mid 50@s to the end of the 60's. When I was a teenager I was part of a group called "The Inmates" and we played a lot of the hits of the time. I then became a "Disc Jockey" playing at weddings, socials and parties. So you see music is in my blood and it always will be. To everybody reading this keep well, keep safe, and keep listening.
Andy Holmes - The Evening Express
Hits from across the decades, pop, news trivia, and fun chat. Andy is one of Hospital Radio Chelmsford's award winners at the HBA Awards 2023 by winning BRONZE for Best Male Presenter.
Alan Chambers - Bedrock
One of my favourite parts of the show is the soft centre where I play 2 soft rock tracks either side of the 11 o’clock news.
There’s also the Blast from the Past feature where I play 3 songs you haven’t heard in ages but you will instantly recognise.
There are 2 chances to get your weekly dose of classic rock on BedRock 10-midnight every Thursday and 10-midday on Fridays so please listen in.
Rosie Jiggins - The Noughties Show
I'm Rosie. I'm a recent graduate from the University of West London where I found my love for radio with the student radio station, Blast Radio. A member of Hospital Radio Chelmsford since 2022, co-hosting the Monday night request show with John Duncombe - having so much fun and laughing all the time! I now host my own music show, The Noughties Show, on a Friday.
I love cats, podcasts, and nostalgic music and I have so much fun presenting on Hospital Radio Chelmsford and I hope to continue for many years to come.
Dave Daniels - The Saturday Show
Hi, I’m Dave Daniels, presenter of ‘The Saturday Show’ on Hospital Radio Chelmsford. The show goes live from 4pm with a cracking mix of 60s, 70s and 80s tuneage. It’s unique to you, the listener, bringing back those music memories!
I’ve been involved with Hospital Radio Chelmsford for over 23 years, having started broadcasting to the patients of Broomfield Hospital when I was 19 years old, after a short stint as a Studio Production Assistant at BBC Essex.
Twenty three years’ of dedicated service, I’ve not had one day of regret becoming a volunteer; from my early days of being in charge of OB’s to sitting on the Committee as Station Manager, I’ve seen it all here!
Why not come along to one of our ‘Intro Nights’ and see if volunteering in radio is the thing for you? You never know you might even be the next Ken Bruce!
John Duncombe - Strictly 70s
I’m John Duncombe and I bought my first record with my pocket money when I was just 8 years old. That was in 1968 and I went on to buy many more records into the 70s and then the 80s, but the 70s were really my favourite era.
I loved all the different types of music from the charts whilst I was at school growing up and into my formative years.
I also sometimes have shows featuring specific artists/groups, as well as shows featuring the many one hit wonders!
So please join me on Hospital Radio Chelmsford for Strictly 70s with 90 minutes of nostalgia! Thursday afternoons at 2.30 repeated on Saturday evenings at 7.30. I hope that you’ll enjoy it!
Cas Seaton - Cosy Up With Cas
Plump up your pillows and relax as Cas Seaton plays an hour of easy-going music from across the decades.
Tony Knight - Sam and Tones Big 80's Bangers
Tony has been with Hospital Radio Chelmsford for a number of years. With a background in DJing going right back to the late 80’s, Tonys musical tastes include, 70’s disco, 80’s and 90’s house and the 90’s club scene. As a presenter on Hospital Radio Chelmsford you will find Tony on one of our many VIP request shows during the week, as well as presenting alongside Sam Jenkins every Saturday with ‘Sam and Tones Big 80’s Bangers’.
Tony is also our programme controller, responsible for the output of the station, as well as being a trustee of the HRC charity.
John Barker - Sunday Soundtrack
John Barker (also known as Johnny Barker, JB, John Boy, Johnnyboy, Oy You! and several others) has been volunteering with Hospital Radio Chelmsford since 2003, when friends encouraged him to join up, having always had a big interest in radio and music. John has been a trustee of our charity as well as spending many years on both Wednesdays and Fridays visiting the wards and co-presenting live request shows. Happiest memories are presenting the B&B Show (No bed, no breakfast, just Bishop and Barker)…blues and classic rock with his late great friend Norman Bishop…and the outside broadcasts and publicity events which spread the word about our wonderful radio station and charity.
John’s day job is as a civil servant but away from that he loves Hospital Radio Chelmsford, and also enjoys his record collection, cycling, live music and theatre shows, Laurel & Hardy and West Ham United.
He currently presents “Sunday Soundtrack”, live every Sunday morning from 10am til 12 noon and looks forward to your company.
Stewart -
I have been part of the HRC volunteer team since June 2022, as a complete newcomer to broadcasting. I have had amazing support from HRC to now be in a position to present my own weekly request shows, in a relatively short period of time.
It is a privilege to be able to contribute, in my own small way, to the Broomfield Hospital Community. “Let the music play” (oh and I do talk quite a lot )

Some of our very popular requests from our listeners
Hospital Radio Chelmsford was established in 1964, initially broadcasting from the Chelmsford and Essex Hospital and then subsequently for a number of years from the Gate Lodge at St. John's Hospital. We now broadcast from our studio complex at Broomfield Hospital. This comprises of two main studios and a third studio for production.
Our hi-tech digital music library, provided by Myriad, consists of approximately 40,000 music tracks catalogued by genre, which enables the presenters to easily find the style of music to be played. This then gets broadcast to you via a digital play out system, or a computer to anyone who doesn't know what that is.
Hospital Radio Chelmsford is a Registered Charity no 1163315
and member of the Hospital Broadcasting Association
