The Broomfield Hospital based service was shortlisted out of 250 stations, nationwide, for several categories including 'Station of the Year' and 'Best Female Presenter'.
The awards ceremony, decked to the rafters with glitz and red carpet, was opened with an address by Prime Minister David Cameron, “We all know how unsettling it is to go into hospital and how worrying it is to see your loved ones there, that’s why Hospital Broadcasting performs such an important job. For eighty five years broadcasters have been bringing humour and fun to hospital wards and in that time they’ve given comfort to millions of people.”
The ceremony saw various stations pick up ‘gongs’ for categories including 'Best Station Promotion', 'Best Event' and 'Best Male/Female Presenter'. Hospital Radio Plymouth was awarded with the accolade of 'Station of the Year' for 2011.
Graham Medhurst, Chairman at Hospital Radio Chelmsford commented on the highlights of the evening:
“It's great the hard work which volunteers dedicate year-in year-out is honoured at events like these. We were really pleased to be shortlisted for a number of awards this year which is testament to the quality of service we provide to help bring comfort and happiness to the patients at Broomfield Hospital.”
Listen to BBC Essex presenter Steve Scruton look back at 2010, click here.
If you are interested in becoming a member of one of the most successful hospital broadcasters in the UK, click here.

A win in 2011 will not only make Hospital Radio Chelmsford one of very few stations to win it 3 times, but also the second only station to win it 2 years in succession. However, the competition is really tough with Perth, Redhill, Plymouth and Northwick Park all strong contenders.
Asha Jhummu is a previous award winner. Asha grabbed Silver for Best Newcomer in 2009.
Hospital Radio Chelmsford has also picked up gongs in the production/promotion sections in the past, and excitingly this is the first year that one of our Specialist Music programmes has been recognised.
The National Hospital Radio Awards, organised by the Hospital Broadcasting Association takes place in Maidstone in late March. The results will be posted here soon after.
Click here to listen to this years entries.
Click here to follow the event, live from Maidstone, Kent.
